چکیده
Self-organizing wireless metropolitan area networks connecting portable GSM/UMTS base stations are a valuable asset to rescue forces in disaster recovery. These networks can be formed by routers employing multiple commercially available IEEE 802.16-2004 interfaces. In this paper, we present and evaluate an algorithm for self-organized topology construction and channel allocation. The algorithm suggests (i) to estimate the capacity of potential wireless links from the measured signalto-noise ratio, (ii) to run a modified Dijkstra algorithm to select links for topology construction in a way that maximizes network capacity and (iii) to greedily allocate channels to minimize interference. We evaluate our algorithm by simulations using QualNet. With the settings preferred by our industry partner, we find that 12 routers per square kilometer are sufficient to enable coverage. Trading path qualities and traffic load on gateways to the wired network significantly improves performance.

متن کاملHoldoff Algorithms for IEEE 802.16 Mesh Mode in Multi-hop Wireless Mesh Networks
Multi-hop wireless mesh networks (M-WMNs) [Akyildiz, I. F., 2005] are one of the key features of beyond 3G systems because of their flexibility and low-cost deployment. So far, most of existing studies on multi-hop wireless mesh networks have been accomplished based on the IEEE 802.11 ad hoc mode. The IEEE 802.16 working group (WG) specified the IEEE 802.16-2004 standard [IEEE Std. 802.16-2004,...
متن کاملOn the Impact of Physical Layer Awareness on Scheduling and Resource Allocation in Broadband Multi-cellular IEEE 802.16 Systems
Multi-cellular networks based on the IEEE 802.16 standard appear as very promising systems to provide endusers with broadband wireless access. However, they also pose interesting challenges in terms of radio resource management, where several decisions are left intentionally open by the standards to the implementors. For this reason, we focus in this paper on scheduling and resource allocation,...
متن کاملA Novel Multicast Tree Construction Algorithm for Multi-Radio Multi-Channel Wireless Mesh Networks
Many appealing multicast services such as on-demand TV, teleconference, online games and etc. can benefit from high available bandwidth in multi-radio multi-channel wireless mesh networks. When multiple simultaneous transmissions use a similar channel to transmit data packets, network performance degrades to a large extant. Designing a good multicast tree to route data packets could enhance the...
متن کاملCooperative Spectrum Sensing Protocols for Cognitive Radio Mesh Networks
In this paper, we consider the cooperative spectrum sensing problem in a cognitive radio (CR) mesh network, where secondary users (SUs) are self-organized into a IEEE 802.16 mesh network sharing the spectrum band allocated to a primary users’ (PUs) network. We propose two new cooperative spectrum sensing strategies, called amplify-and-relay (AR) and detect-andrelay (DR), aiming at improving the...
